The Heart Behind Our Christmas Card
A reflection on presence, belonging, and Emmanuel
Setting the Scene
A softly lit living room. A glowing Christmas tree, its branches full and warm. A fireplace crackling nearby. People gathered together – resting, laughing, simply being. It’s the kind of scene many of us associate with Christmas: peaceful, cozy, familiar.
Our Christmas card invites you into that moment – a pause in the busyness of the season. A picture of togetherness during Advent, when we prepare our hearts to celebrate the arrival of Jesus, Emmanuel – God with us.
But if you look closely, you’ll notice something that is often missing from traditional holiday imagery.
Why This Imagery Matters
Christmas cards frequently reflect an idealized version of the holidays, one that unintentionally leaves many people out. For individuals and families in the disability community, it’s not uncommon to feel unseen in the stories, images, and traditions that circulate this time of year.
At WITH, we wanted to do something different.
We wanted our Christmas card to reflect the real body of Christ – diverse, interdependent, and beautiful in all its expressions. Not perfect. Not polished. Just honest. Just together.

The “With Us” Vision
This year’s Advent theme, “With Us,” intentionally plays on both the heart of WITH Ministries and the promise of Emmanuel.
God with us —with us in disability, with us in belonging, with us in joy, with us in struggle, with us in community.
This Christmas card serves as the visual beginning of that message – a tangible reminder of what “with-ness” truly looks like.
Why Include Disabled and Nondisabled People Together
Disability is not an exception to the human experience – it is part of it.
In the illustration, you’ll see people with and without disabilities sharing the same space. One person uses a wheelchair. Others may use adaptive tools – headphones, fidget items, braces. And some use none at all.
No one is centered as a “lesson.” No one is singled out. Everyone simply belongs.
This isn’t tokenism. It’s representation, and representation shapes what we imagine is normal, especially within the Church.
How This Reflects God’s Heart
Scripture reminds us again and again that God’s presence is not limited by ability, productivity, or physical condition. Emmanuel does not come only to the strong, the healed, or the self-sufficient.
He comes to dwell with us – fully, joyfully, intentionally.
During Advent, we are invited to slow down and notice God among us. Often, that presence is most visible when we are gathered together, making space for one another in love.
Our Hope for This Card
Our hope is simple, but deep:
- That people with disabilities feel seen, loved, and included
- That churches pause and reflect on how they welcome all people
- That families and partners feel encouraged to pursue deeper, more intentional community
May this card be more than something you open and set aside — may it be something you carry with you into your own holiday gatherings and conversations.
A Gentle Invitation
As we journey through Advent, we invite you to walk with us in the “With Us” story. Throughout 2026, we’ll be sharing more reflections, stories, and resources centered on belonging and faithful inclusion.
Until then, may this be your reminder:
God is near. God is present. God is – truly – with us.
